In 2003, Six Degrees were approached by Federation Square explore the possibility of reactivating the neglected vaults area of the riverside in time for the 2006 Commonwealth Games. Federation Square representatives agreed to explore options of a mixed-use redevelopment. An appropriate tenancy mix was established including the bar Riverland – an integral part of the strategy to attract life and vibrancy to the precinct.
The bar was designed to push the space as close to the water’s edge as possible – offering a real escapist hospitality experience for punters in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD. A series of pontoon like decks extend out opposite the vaults, almost floating above the Yarra River. The decks function in all seasons, maximizing the potential of the bar whose interior space (inside the vaults) is relatively small in comparison.
