St John the Baptist’s new School Hall provides multipurpose space to both the School and the wider parish community. The building was required to integrate fully into the school grounds, connect with the site’s history and surrounding context and needed to be incredibly robust and durable, ensuring zero maintenance of the hall into the future.
The building has two ‘faces’, one looking inward to the school and one outward to the community via a separate street entrance. Its back corner location put it at risk of being isolated; this was resolved by removing a toilet block and creating a visual axis from the new hall to the school’s 1920s main administration building. This axis ties a series of landscape elements along it such as a new ramp and a concrete amphitheater.
