Sacred Heart
Mission

St Kilda

Started by Parish Priest Father Ernie Smith in 1982, Sacred Heart Mission is Melbourne’s biggest restaurant, serving around 400 lunches daily for homeless and disadvantaged community members. It also provides clothing, emergency relief, accommodation, health services and companionship.

Their premises were run down so our aim was to provide a fresh, functional and welcoming environment for staff, volunteers and clients.

Our design addressed the dining room and kitchens as well as the clinical, counselling and admin facilities. The public entry to the mission was re‑positioned from the back door (down an alleyway) to the front door, helping to make clients feel valued rather than hidden.
